It all started when a server decided to cry for help in the midst of a delicious lunch. Despite our best efforts to answer the insistent calls of our pagers, we could not find a suitable network — read: secure, fast, reliable — to connect our laptops to. Here we were, in the middle of Manchester, carrying more gear than most people see in their entire life, but still unable to access the Internet. We had no choice but to cut our lunch short and scoot back to the office. That was when we knew we had to take the matter into our own hands, bringing the power of networking to our fellow citizens, and to ourselves in the process.
A free, high-quality, pervasive Internet connection facilitates the free exchange of ideas and information, enables the creation of large-scale communities and helps businesses stay in control at all times. A free, high-quality, pervasive Internet connection is the key to a city that lives, thinks, makes money and pushes things forward — in other words, a city that thrives! Our aim with DynWiFi is to make that very dream a reality.
We are happy to report that the DynWiFi initiative met with the approval of the local authorities. Mayor Frank Guinta has written business owners to ask them to participate, and our very own Chamber of Commerce hosts a node in its boardroom. And with the enthusiastic support of a great many local entrepreneurs, who help make DynWiFi a daily reality by hosting a node, its future is shining brightly. So brightly, in fact, that the project has already been covered by high profile media such as MSNBC.
Countless other community WiFi projects have failed because of a lack of technical foresight. However, being a leader in networking, we would not let this stop us!
DynWiFi is based on the principle of Mesh Networking. This means the DynWiFi network is self-configuring and self-healing. Contributing to DynWiFi, let alone using the network, requires no technical knowledge whatsoever. Our unique understanding of resilient, large scale networks is — yet again! — put to good use, as we monitor, survey and optimize the system across town.
The DynWiFi web site features more information on the project, an updated coverage map as well as instructions on how to contribute to DynWiFi in Manchester. In fact, if you have already joined the “Free Manchester Hotspot” network while in town, this is the DynWiFi network you were surfing!
